What is the FTSE 100?
FTSE 100:
A stock index comprised of the 100 largest stocks in the United Kingdom
(traded on the London Stock Exchange). It serves as a benchmark for the
performance of large cap stocks in the UK. The FTSE 100 is also called the
footsie.

It is a
market cap weighted index and is therefore, more heavily influenced by
its large cap stocks.

The largest 10 components by market capitalization on September, 5, 2008
were Anglo American, BG Grp (British Gas), BHP Billiton, British Petroleum,
Glaxosmithkline, Hsbc Hldg, Rio Tinto, Royal Dutch Shell-A, Royal Dutch
Shell-B, Vodafone Grp Plc Ads. These stocks represented nearly 50% of the
value of the index on that date.
